"Goldschmidt Yoeman Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a small terraced knoll just east of the town of Geyserville on Rte 128. There exist four such knolls in the Alexander Valley, two of which are plantable. These knolls are highly prized for their north and east facing slopes and provide cool micro-climates offering soft morning sun. A northern aspect is very unusual for the appellation, as almost all vineyards face south and west and therefore must endure the afternoon heat. The Alexander Valley tends to produce wines with higher alcohol and primarily red fruit characteristics, but Goldschmidt Yoeman Vineyard is different in that it shows balanced alcohol, black fruits, and huge structure.
The vineyard is comprised primarily of gravelly loam soil. Excellent drainage and cool temperatures promote slower grape maturation and a long “hang time” ensues. Of all our vineyards, Yoeman is generally picked last: about 145 days from bloom to harvest. Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux, for instance, is picked weeks earlier.
2009 was a fantastic vintage. Abundant spring rains abated winter drought concerns, and a relatively temperate growing season produced excellent fruit quality. A mid-October rain caused some concern for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot on the vines, but these tough-skinned, loose-clustered varietals remained unaffected. Indian summer weather followed the rainy, humid conditions, allowing the grapes to reach optimum maturity.
Goldschmidt Yoeman Vineyard shows enormous power and layering, an atypical expression from Alexander Valley. Loads of cherry fruit and chestnut in the nose with black cherry fruit flavors. Decant for at least 1 hour to allow the wine to open."

"This is one of the best Alexander Valley Cabs of the vintage. It shows tightly controlled tannins framing luxurious black cherry, currant, dark chocolate and oak flavors that are dramatically rich and balanced. So delicious now, it’s hard to keep from popping the cork, but it should develop in the bottle over the next eight years."
