Vineyard: Game Ranch

Wine Description:
"The prestigious Game Ranch Vineyard lies on the east side of the Oakville District AVA along the Silverado Trail. The highly pedigreed vineyards of Screaming Eagle and Nickel & Nickel lie just to the north. This sub-section of the Oakville AVA is renowned for superb, richly-textured Cabernet Sauvignon. The Game Ranch is an old river bottom made up of very rocky, well draining soils influenced by the primarily volcanic composition of the Vaca Mountains: gravelly alluvium covered by shallow gravelly loam and in some places interspersed with large boulders. In this stressful, low moisture environment, the vines struggle to put everything they can into the development of the fruit. With perfect control over the watering of this vineyard site we are able to coax the vines to produce grapes of great concentration and exceptional quality. Exemplary sustainable farming practices provided dense clusters with perfect flavor and maturity. “2009 proved to a terrific harvest and the fruit came in fully ripe. Everything came in clean with nice flavor. The 2009 vintage has a perfumed nose with intense black currant and blueberry flavors; smoke and walnut show in the finish.” Decant"

97 Points - WIne Enthusiast Magazine
"This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in 85% new oak, and it shows the essence of Oakville in its dry, tannic, ripe and complex identity. It would be hard to exaggerate the excellence of the blackberries, black currants, black cherries, dark chocolate and oak flavors, which have a Christmas-pudding-like headiness. A hint of raisin suggests it approaches overripeness, yet it maintains superb control. The tannins and overall balance should help this age for many years, but it can also be consumed now. "

Most of the summer was normal, except August, which had cool weather in the beginning and then 108 degree weather at the end. The very good weather experienced during September and October brought us outstanding fruit. Our 2010 Goldschmidt shows deep garnet color, notes of cassis, red fruit, and spice on the nose, very smooth and velvety mouth-feel with blueberry, caramel and vanilla, near- perfect balance, rich and powerful and broadly framed.“
